Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is an excellent way to learn new skills through a mix of on-the-job training and theoretical tuition that will lead you to obtain a formal qualification. As an apprentice, you spend your theoretical tuition time at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) or at the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS), depending on your chosen career path. Your on-the-job training provides you with an excellent opportunity to learn through practice in a real place of work. As an apprentice, you will earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills.

All you need to know on our apprenticeship schemes...

Q. What is there to gain?
A. Through your experience on-the-job you will get a realistic view into the world of work.  This experience, together with the theoretical training, will lead you towards acquiring a number of nationally recognized qualifications which is  proof that you are competent in a particular occupational area. This means that you will stand an excellent chance of having a rewarding career. Over 85% of our apprentices end up in full time employment after the apprenticeship whilst others continue their education or start their own business.

Q. What kind of assistance will I get during the Apprenticeship?
A. Besides the maintenance grants, you will also earn a wage that is paid to you by the employer that supports your learning.

From our end, we will assist you to find a training placement, monitor your progress and will also be meeting with you through a number of monitoring visits that take place during the apprenticeship year to make sure that the training you are getting meets current requirements.

Q. For which occupations are apprenticeships available?
A. Apprenticeships are available across a wide range of industries and provide excellent career prospects to apprentices.

Two different levels are available:

The Technician Apprenticeship Scheme (TAS)
The Extended Skill Training Scheme (ESTS)

Q. What conditions will I be entitled to?
A. During your apprenticeship, you will be considered an employee of the employer providing you with the training and as such you will be entitled to similar conditions as other employees within the same organisation.

Q. How will I find an employer that is willing to provide me with on-the-job training?
A. We will give you the necessary assistance and will be submitting you to employers for interviews.
